Tumble Dryer Running Costs UK 2026: Cost Per Load

A tumble dryer costs 35p to £1.25 a load to run in 2026, depending on type. The sums by vented, condenser and heat pump dryer, plus 9 ways to cut the cost.

Tumble dryers have a reputation as the most expensive appliance in the house, and for one type of dryer that reputation is entirely deserved. For another type it is now badly out of date. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive way to tumble dry the same load of washing in 2026 is nearly a pound per cycle, which over a year is the difference between £66 and £184 on your electricity bill.

The short version: a heat pump tumble dryer costs roughly 35p to 50p per load, a vented dryer around £1.10, and a condenser dryer around £1.25. This guide shows exactly how those numbers are calculated so you can work out what your own machine costs, and whether replacing it would actually pay.

All figures use an electricity unit rate of 24.5p per kWh, in line with the current price cap and the rate we use across our other running cost guides.

How much does a tumble dryer cost to run per load?

Every appliance running cost comes down to the same sum:

Energy used (kWh) × your unit rate (p/kWh) = cost per cycle

The only variable that matters is how many kilowatt hours your dryer uses to complete a cycle. That figure is on the energy label, quoted per "eco cotton" cycle, and it varies enormously by dryer type because the three technologies remove water in fundamentally different ways.

Here is what a full 8kg cotton load costs to dry in 2026 at 24.5p/kWh:

Two things surprise people about that table. The first is that condenser dryers are usually the *most* expensive to run, not the cheapest - they have to condense the moisture out of the air rather than vent it outside, which takes additional energy. The second is that the heat pump gap is not marginal. A heat pump dryer does the same job for roughly a third of the electricity.

Why heat pump tumble dryers cost so much less to run

A vented or condenser dryer works by brute force. It heats air with an electric element, blows it through the drum to pick up moisture, then throws that hot, wet air away - out of a hose in a vented model, or into a condenser unit in a condenser model. Either way the heat you paid for leaves the machine and is gone.

A heat pump dryer recycles it. It uses a refrigerant circuit - the same principle as a fridge running in reverse, or a domestic heat pump for heating - to extract moisture from the air, then reheats that same air and sends it round again. Almost none of the energy escapes.

The trade-off is time. Heat pump dryers run cooler, so a full cotton cycle typically takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours against 1.5 to 2 hours for a condenser. They are gentler on fabrics as a result, but if you need a load turned round in an hour, they will frustrate you.

Tumble dryer running costs per year

The UK energy label assumes 160 cycles a year, which works out at roughly three loads a week. That is a reasonable average for a family of four; a single-person household might do 50, a household with small children can easily hit 250.

At 160 cycles a year and 24.5p/kWh:

To put that in context, £196 a year is roughly a tenth of a typical dual-fuel bill going on one appliance. It is also more than most households spend on standby power across the entire house, which tells you where the attention is better spent. Are heat pump tumble dryers worth the extra cost?

This is the question that matters, because heat pump dryers cost more up front. In 2026 you are looking at roughly:

  • Condenser or vented dryer: £250-£400
  • Heat pump dryer: £400-£750

Call the premium £200 on a like-for-like comparison. Against a condenser dryer at 160 cycles a year, a heat pump model saves about £125 annually. That is a payback of well under two years, after which the saving is yours every year for the life of the machine - typically ten years or more.

At 250 cycles a year the payback drops to about ten months. At 50 cycles a year it stretches to four years, which is still comfortably inside the machine's lifespan but much less compelling.

The honest answer, then: if you tumble dry regularly, a heat pump dryer is one of the few energy upgrades that genuinely pays for itself quickly. If you dry a couple of loads a month over winter and hang everything out the rest of the year, the numbers are far less exciting and you would be better off putting the money into insulation or draught proofing.

One caveat: do not replace a working condenser dryer purely on running cost grounds. The £200 premium assumes you were buying a dryer anyway. If your current machine has years left in it, the payback calculation has to absorb the whole £400-£750, which pushes it out to four or five years.

A heated airer costs around 7p an hour to run, which makes it the cheapest indoor option and roughly a third of the cost of a condenser dryer per load. It is not quite the free lunch it looks like, though - drying clothes indoors puts several litres of water into the air, and if your home is not well ventilated that shows up as condensation and mould on cold walls. A heated airer with a cover, used in a room with a window cracked open or a dehumidifier running, is the sensible setup.

Interestingly, a heat pump dryer is now close enough to heated airer running costs that the convenience argument tips in the dryer's favour for many households - roughly 40p versus 30p per load, but done in three hours inside a sealed drum that vents the moisture properly rather than into your bedroom.

What the energy label actually tells you

Two numbers on the label matter, and most people read neither.

Energy consumption per cycle (kWh). This is the number to compare. It is measured on the standard eco cotton programme at full load. Divide it by your unit rate and you have your real cost per cycle. A dryer showing 1.61 kWh will cost you 39p a load at 24.5p/kWh; one showing 4.88 kWh will cost £1.20.

Condensation efficiency class (A to G). Only on condenser and heat pump models. This tells you how much of the moisture the machine captures rather than releasing into the room. A class A machine captures over 90%; a class G captures under 60%, and the difference ends up on your walls. Worth checking if the dryer lives in a utility room or kitchen without good ventilation.

The letter rating on its own is less useful than it used to be. The scale was reset in 2021, so a dryer sold as A+++ under the old scheme might be labelled B or C today without anything about the machine changing. Compare kWh figures, not letters.

9 ways to cut your tumble dryer running costs

1. Spin faster before you dry. This is the single biggest lever and it costs nothing. Increasing your washing machine's spin speed from 1,000 to 1,400 rpm removes noticeably more water, cutting dryer time by 10-15%. A 1,600 rpm spin cuts it further. The washing machine uses a few extra watts for a couple of minutes; the dryer saves several hundred watts for twenty.

2. Dry full loads, but do not overfill. A half-empty drum wastes the same heat on less washing. An overpacked drum stops the air circulating, so the cycle runs longer and the clothes come out damp anyway. Roughly three quarters full is the sweet spot.

3. Use the sensor programme, not a timer. Sensor drying stops when the clothes are dry. Timed drying runs the full duration regardless, and the last ten minutes of a timed cycle are usually pure waste. If your machine has both, the sensor setting will nearly always be cheaper.

4. Clean the lint filter every single cycle. A clogged filter restricts airflow, which extends cycle times by up to 30%. It takes five seconds. On condenser and heat pump models, also rinse the secondary condenser filter monthly - this is the one people forget, and a blocked one hits efficiency hard.

5. Separate heavy items from light ones. Towels and jeans take far longer to dry than shirts and underwear. Mixed loads mean the sensor keeps the whole cycle running until the heaviest item is dry, cooking everything else for no reason.

6. Dry consecutive loads back to back. The drum and the heat exchanger are already warm, so the second cycle needs less energy to get up to temperature. Doing two loads on Saturday morning costs less than one on Saturday and one on Tuesday.

7. Shift drying to your cheap tariff window. If you are on a time-of-use tariff like Octopus Go or Intelligent Octopus, off-peak electricity runs at 7-9p/kWh against 24-26p at peak. Running a condenser dryer in the cheap window drops a £1.23 load to around 40p - a bigger saving than upgrading the machine. 8. Use dryer balls. Wool dryer balls separate the laundry in the drum so air moves through it more freely. The effect is modest - typically 10-15% off cycle time - but they cost under £10 and last for years.

9. Measure before you assume. Manufacturer label figures are lab conditions on the eco programme. Your real machine on your real programme with your real loads may use considerably more. On Octopus Go or a similar off-peak tariff, night-time drying costs roughly a third as much. Never run a dryer unattended overnight, though - lint build-up remains a genuine fire risk.

Does a full load cost more than a half load?

Slightly more in absolute terms, but far less per item. A sensor-controlled dryer runs longer with more washing in it, but the extra time is small relative to the extra volume dried, so full loads are always more efficient per garment.

The bottom line

Tumble dryer running costs in 2026 come down almost entirely to which of three technologies is inside the machine. A condenser dryer costs around £1.25 a load and close to £200 a year. A heat pump dryer does the same work for about 40p a load and £71 a year, and the roughly £200 price premium pays back in under two years for any household drying three loads a week.
